Joi and Daniel LaChaussee, who have adapted
the ancient techniques of glassblowing to create original
designs in handblown glass vessels.
They
create their Starfish Bowl series of furled vessels in a
variety of colors, each with a contrasting or complimentary
lip wrap. They also create an Aquarium Collection of consisting
of individual pieces (clam shells, sea urchins, starfish
and fish) that can be combined in sculptural groupings.
Their
collaborative efforts take advantage of Joi's fine arts
and sculpting background and Daniel's extensive command
of technical glassmaking and chemistry. When working with
colored glass it is particularly important that each color
is chemically compatible with any others with which it is
combined.
They
use techniques of their own invention, as well as many classic
glassblowing techniques that date back to pre-Roman times
and were widely used by Renaissance glassblowers in 16th
Century Venice.
The
LaChaussees design and create each piece individually, using
combinations of transparent and opaque colors with clear
crystal. They began working in glass in 1981 and established
their own studio on a remote island off the coast of Seattle
in 1988.
Joi
earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in ceramics from the
University of Colorado, then studied glass at the Appalachian
Center for Crafts. Both she and Dan studied glass at the
two of the world's finest schools, the Pratt Art Center
and the Pilchuck Glass School, both in Washington state.
Their
works have been shown at major galleries and museums throughout
the United States and in Germany, and are included in numerous
public and private collections.
