Maestro Mario Badioli was born in Murano
in February 12, 1940. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed
to the already famous master glass blower Ermanno Nason,
at the firm: Mazzega I.V.M. The firm, which specializes
in the production of glass beads, mosaics and low cost light
fixtures for bath rooms, was well-known all over Europe.
Badioli not only gained a great deal of experience working
with Ermanno Nason, but he also had the chance to see how
many other, different kinds of glass, was produced in the
island.
This
was to have a bearing effect on his future. From 1958 to
1960 he attended the Venice Art Institute, where he studied
under Professor Angolo Fuga. In the same period started
working, still with the same firm, Mazzega I.V.M., as a
junior master. His special task was to develop ornaments,
small size decorative items. He remained there until 1962,
five years in all, working with the softer quality of glass
that is used to make small animals and tiny glass gondolas.
This gave him the opportunity to study proportions and three
dimensional figures, on which were to prove important later
on.
His
first experience as a Maestro came in 1968 when he began
working for Fratelli Pitau. He remained there for 10 years
working on many different types of productions. Here he
was able to develop figurines, old style chandeliers and
heavy bowls, and vases. It was during this time period that
he began painting, reproducing works of art by Picasso.
From 1979 until late 1983 he worked for the firm: Oball,
where he only produced heavier items. His knowledge of drawing
and art encouraged him to embark on a new venture. He sought
the help of local artists and later of international artists
too. His favorite artist was Picasso, but he was never able
to meet him.
After
1984, in his own glassworks-studio, he was finally able
to work freely, and began working on glass sculptures. His
earliest sculptures were still experimental by he caught
the eye of Robert Seherer fro Bolzano, he organized a major
exhibition-performed for Mario Badioli in his city. The
exhibition helped make Badiolis work known to a wider
audience and the artist reaped the benefits of fame.
Every
year Mario Badioli presents his Masterpieces
at the Venice Vetro Aperto where experts such as Professor
Angelo Zennaro are able to appreciate the work he does.
Every year all over Europe, there are exhibitions of Badiolis
work and his sculptures can be found in the most important
glass galleries and shows.
